From Brandon Horton, proud father of Baylin Horton & Larime Horton of Girl Scout Troop 711:
Our Girl Scouts have been working for over a year to complete their Bronze Award and this week they finished! I appreciate all the guidance and encouragement their Leader Dana Craig has provided them on this journey and Marcie Cunnyngham at Aging Services of Cleveland County for being a great Community Partner. Here is a summary of their project from the report they submitted for Award Approval 💙 #ToHelpOtherPeopleAtAllTimes #Helpful #Considerate #Caring #GirlScoutsFromHome
“We started in 2019 with a completely different project and began planning and preparing…then lock-down happened! We quickly identified the new problem in our community was the safety of our Seniors from the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. For our Bronze Award Project we decided the most important service to our community now, was the Safety of our Seniors. We learned that about 80% of those dying from Covid-19 were 65 years of age or older. In our community we reached out again to Marcie Cunnyngham, at Aging Services, and identified Seniors that were receiving daily meals delivered to them through their meal service. Many of these Seniors are homebound for safety or medical reasons and need most of their things delivered to them.
After many discussions with her, we decided the most helpful thing we could do for them is to remind them how to stay safe and protected. We designed a postcard that can be taped to their front door with safety tips from the CDC and provided them with a disposable mask. Since most of these Seniors get their daily supplies and meals delivered, then wearing a mask and being reminded at their front door was the best place for this to keep them safe. Then we packaged 100 postcards with tape on the back and a disposable mask together in a sealed bag.
We partnered with Aging Services to deliver them to the Seniors with their daily hot meals.
Aging Services has delivered to 58 Seniors and plans to continue with the kits we provided until they have delivered them all. The printer provided 50 extra cards at no charge too to give to seniors who already have masks. We also provided Aging Services with the pdf file to be able to print more cards for other areas or as needed throughout the pandemic.
