About Aging Services, Inc.

History and Background

Aging Services, Inc. has been operating in Cleveland County since 1975.

The organization was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) per Internal Revenue Service regulations since 1988. The organization was formed as a result of the passage of the Older Americans Act. The Older Americans Act (OAA) was signed into law on July 14, 1965 and is periodically reauthorized by the United States Congress. The Older Americans Act is a component of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society Legislation. The Older Americans Act established the Administration on Aging and created the Aging Services Network that includes 56 State Units on Aging, 629 Area Agencies on Aging, 246 title VI Native American aging programs and over 20,000 service provider organizations. In September 2006, Congress reauthorized the Act reinforcing its mission to enhance the ability of older Americans to live with maximum dignity and independence while adding several new initiatives to the existing responsibilities of the aging services network.

Since 1975, Aging Services, Inc. has grown and developed to serve the needs of aging senior adults in Cleveland County Oklahoma. ASI holds the Older American Act contract with the Areawide Aging Agency to administer the OAA/Title III Program in Cleveland County. ASI administered the Eldercare Program in Cleveland County for many years before the program was shut down. In 1997, ASI began an Advantage Case Management Program. In 2000, ASI became the provider for Advantage Meals in Cleveland County. Traditionally, in the OAA/Title III Program and the Eldercare Program, ASI clients were age 60 and over. However, since the implementation of the Advantage Program, some ASI Case Management clients may be under age 60. Even so, they are assessed to be at the ‘institutional level of care’ by DHS and they are low-income, frail, at risk and face the same physical, mental, social, emotional, and isolation challenges as many of the ASI senior adult clients.

In the fall of September 2012, Aging Services, Inc. began a Respite Voucher Program funded by an additional Older Americans Act grant. The Program aids full time live in caregivers and grandparents raising grandchildren by providing vouchers to cover the expense of care so that the care giver or the grandparent can get a break from their caregiving responsibilities.
